2006 Antivirus Review

What do Genocide, Darkstar, and Doomjuice all have in common? They’re extremely destructive viruses that we’ve chosen to release on this year's list of antivirus manufactures to test their ability. And that’s just three of the ten viruses we dumped on them. We also tested each products ease of installation, tested the default configuration, documented how much resources it hogs, their customer service, and lastly how much they cost.

We rated each product a 1 out 5 in each of these categories to give it a quantitive ‘Shield’ value. A product with one shield is unacceptable and a product with 5 shields is the best.

Trend Micro Internet Security 2006

Loving the Trend
Reviewing Trend Micro  Internet Security 2006

I've never been a trend setter, or a follower, but when I discovered the power of Trend Micro’s Internet Security 2006 I was ready to roll my jeans and pop my collar. It would be an understatement to say I did a triple take when Trend Micro found 123 viruses on the system after I just completed reviewing another leading product on. It went on to find another 33 spyware files! It’s fast, it’s easy, and hands down secure as Alcatraz itself… nothings escaping from this secure product.

Shield Antivirus 2006

Real-Time Misses Mark
Reviewing Shield Antivirus 2006
8/20/06

Last year's leader on our Antivirus Review still remains to be great value, forgiving on system resources and still providing free phone customer service. This year's review surprised me when  half of the viruses we fired at the computer, running Shield Antivirus 2006, made it onto the hard drive and weren’t discovered until we ran a full system scan. As ability is the most important factor in our review, they missed the top spot this year.

McAfee Virus Scan 2006

Like a Good Cigar
Reviewing McAfee Virus Scan 2006 Review

Do you know why people pay so much for a good cigar? One word... consistency. That's what McAfee is to the computer security world, consistent. I personally don't think they make the 'best' product, but they consistently make a very good antivirus application that continues to secure and resist the onslaught of online contamination. Every time we've tested McAfee products they've been solid. This month we tested McAfee's Virus Scan 2006.

Norton Antivirus 2006

Safety Comes at Cost
Reviewing Norton Antivirus 2006
6/01/06

Norton continues to be the best selling antivirus solution for consumer computers. With the exception of a few vulnerabilities that have been found in their product, your computer should be safe with this product. But sometimes safety comes with a cost, and with Norton it's the expense of heavy resource utilization with many background processes and paying top dollar.

Bit Defender 9

Bit Confusing
Reviewing Bit Defender 9
8/20/06

Bit Defender 9 protected the bytes but added to some confusion when it turned out it hadn't updated it's virus definition files after it told us it had during the installation of the product. Later finding out it cut itself off at the knees by disabling the Internet connection before it updated itself with enough information to fight the offender.

Kaspersky 9.0

Failed the Test
Reviewing Kaspersky 6.0

During last years antivirus review, Kaspersky had so many installation errors we gave up on it. This year it completed the install only to leave three viruses wreaking havoc on our hard drive without detecting them at all.

Panda Antivirus 2006

Bear Got No Bite
Reviewing Panda Titanium 2006
8/20/06

Panda Titanium seemed to be a solid application, until it missed all ten of the viruses we threw at it. All viruses were successfully planted on the hard drive, as though no real-time protection were running. After verifying the setup in the control panel, and making sure the product was up to date, it would only detect them during a full system scan.
