2024-11-20 Does a home user need a router for added security?
I have read all of your reviews on
the virus software companies. My question is; does a home user need a
router for added security? I have been told by many who use computers
that it's a good idea. The only one who said that I should "take it
back to the store", was a tech support worker at my ISP. Well what is
your opinion?
Thank You, Mr. Ford
To Have or Not to Have... that is the question.

2007 Firewall Review |
|
What are you going to do when he comes a knockin? The big bad wolf is back, and hundred of attacks are proof enough he's developed some technical skills. Will you get blown away, or is your firewall secure as bricks? Our 2007 Firewall test aims to examine the ability of the leading software firewalls. Our firewall tests multiple, critical facets of the firewall. First we performed a host scan of all the well known Trojan ports. Trojans create an outbound communication channel to a destination to pass information to. It's critical the firewall protect these ports. Second, we check the ports 1 through 5,000 to see if any are left open and exposed. And lastly we performed a leak test on the firewalls to see which ones will stop outbound communications. Traditionally firewalls were destined to stop incoming attacks from reaching your computer, but today it takes a firewall that can actively detect attempts to create outbound communication due the onslaught of spyware. Spyware applications are being built into a large number of programs are designed to communication with an Internet host to download new advertisements onto your computer. Even today’s leading computer games are participating in downloading advertisements into the game scenes. Today there is less emphasis on a antispyware application, and more emphasis on a firewall that can detect, and stop spyware from being downloaded onto your computer. Below is a summary of the tests we performed on each firewall. We rated each product a 1 out 5 in each of these categories to give it a quantitive ‘Shield’ value. A product with one shield is unacceptable and a product with 5 shields is the best. |
