2007 Antivirus Review

Norton Antivirus 2007

Norton released their new Antivirus package for 2007, and with it you get spyware protection, firewall, and a myriad of other beneficial security utilities. The other great news, it seems they've worked on cleaning up system processes and resources utilization. Norton has sometimes been labeled a 'System Hog' by many users and experts, and this years package seems to address some of those complaints and at the same time continue to provide top end virus protection and security from the world leading antivirus provider.

Installation:
Before installing Norton Antivirus 2007, you are required to install Microsoft Windows Installer on your computer, and are asked to update if you do not already have it. After the update, you are presented with the license agreement and must enter your valid Product Key to continue with the installation. As part of the installation you are also presented with the option of installing the 'Symantec Yahoo! Toolbar', but it is not selected by default. After a long wait for the install to complete it is confirmed by a splash screen that it has been installed successfully. You’re asked for your registration information afterwards also. Are only complaint is there were no custom installation options. With so many utilities being combined into one package it would be nice to have control over what gets installed.

Configuration:
Upon the install completion Norton automatically offers to update all of it's components including virus definition patterns. It presents the available updates and asks you to confirm.

Norton, like McAfee, uses a central security management utility. Norton calls theirs the 'Norton Protection Center' and displays your protection status with firewall, updates, virus, spyware and Windows updates.

By default real-Time scanning is turned on, along with automatic updates, and email scanning. A weekly full scan is also setup already, which you can edit. It's also setup to scan removable media, which is an improvement over last year’s editions. Norton also uses heuristics, and is turned on. The reporting and alerting options are also minimized to only alert you on medium and high events.

Resources:
The full system scan took eighteen minutes on our 6gig drive, with appsvc32.exe taking 65% CPU utilization on average. As we mentioned earlier, it seems Norton Antivirus 2007 has really worked on optimizing their system processes and utilizition. Below are the processes we identified being ran by Norton. They took a total of 98mb of system memory, and the program used only 28mb of hard drive space.

aluscheduler.exe 2.8

appsvc32.exe 44

ccapp.exe 2.7mb

ccsvchst.exe 27mb

navw32.exe 9mb

nvsvc32.exe 3.2mb

aupdate.exe 6.7

lucallbackproxy 2.9

Total = 98mb

After installing Norton Antivirus 2007, I still noticed an additional 10 to 15 seconds for the system to either shut down or reboot. This didn't happen with Norton 2006 AV.

I've used NAV for many years. My gripe with NAV2006 is that it's been an extreme resource hog during its automatic updates. Once or twice a day it takes over my whole computer for about a minute. Nothing else can get done while it's updating, which is really disruptive to other work. Your review didn't address this specific issue as to whether it's among the performance improvements in the 2007 version.
